Decrease A Painful Neuropathy Flare Up

Neuropathy flare ups can be both painful and scary.  There are some simple steps that you can use to decrease your neuropathy flare up symptoms when they happen and, for those of you without neuropathy, can even help with overly sensitive skin.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This nerve damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet.

When calming a neuropathy flare up, the first step is to drive new blood to the area.  As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up and begin to die.  Because of blood vessel death, the nerves do not get nutrients needed to survive. A flare up happens when the nerves have become particularly irritated through physical activity, diet changes, or stress.

There are three main tools that Peripheral Neuropathy patients can use to help decrease a flare up when it’s already happening.

1.  Neurostim brush to stimulate blood flow to the area.
2.  Warm and cold foot/hand baths to bring fresh blood to the area.
3.  Ultima Neuro Advance Neuropathy Stimulator to retrain nerve-brain connections that are sending pain signals.

Both the neurostim brush technique and the warm and cold baths are specifically designed to gently bring fresh blood to the affected area. A gentle “slapping” or “tapping” of the affected area has been successfully used by practitioners on areas of overly sensitive skin.  This can also be beneficial for Peripheral Neuropathy sufferers.  Additionally, the neurostim brush technique will stimulate blood flow to the area.

The warm and cold foot baths have a similar use.  Warm water causes your blood vessels to expand while cold water causes blood vessels to contract.  Alternating between warm and cold temperature causes a gentle pumping of the vessels which drives out old blood and brings in new, nutrient rich blood.

The Ultima Neuro is a wonderful at-home tool that has some fascinating technology behind it.  The Ultima Neuro acts like a pacemaker for the nerve-brain connection that’s causing your body to feel pain.  As the nerves begin to wither and die from lack of blood supply they begin to send pain (or numbness, tingling, heat, cold, etc.) signals to the brain.  The Ultima Neuro reads the unhealthy pain signal and corrects the signal to a healthy signal before sending the information to your brain.  This initially decreases pain and, over time as your feet or hands heal, rebuilds healthy nerve connections.  At the same time, the Ultima Neuro works similarly to a TENS unit, but in a more customized way, to gently pump the surrounding muscles to bring even more fresh healing blood to the area.

Our clinical experience has shown that these three techniques can help patients who are also working to rebuild their blood supply in the office with our Neuropathy Relief program.
